Writing a resume with both style and substance can be a difficult task for many recent graduates. Despite their academic achievements and newfound knowledge, they battle with how to effectively showcase their skills and experiences on paper. In a competitive job market where first impressions matter, the ability to express your qualifications succinctly and persuasively is crucial. However, the thought of resume writing, from formatting to content selection, can be a challenge for those who are just starting their career. As such, many new graduates find themselves struggling to grasp the basics of resume writing.

Follow these simple guidelines, and you'll not only enhance your resume's effectiveness in making it through the automated screening processes but also increase its appeal to the recruiter. Investing time and effort into building your resume will really pay off during your job hunt.

Use Headings and Sections: Organize your resume into clear sections such as "Work Experience", "Education”, "Skills”, and "Achievements”. This helps the AI parse your information accurately and easier to read.

Use Easy to Read Fonts: Stick to standard fonts like Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman to ensure your resume is easily readable by AI systems and looks good on a screen.

Clear Formatting: Use a clean and simple resume format. Avoid excessive graphics, images, or complex layouts that can confuse the AI algorithms.

Avoid Spelling and Grammatical Errors: If you’re currently working use present tense, if you’re no longer working, past tense! Use spell check and ask someone to proofread for you.

Education and Certifications: Highlight your education and any relevant certifications, keep it concise. Place this information near the top of your resume.

Highlight Skills: Include a dedicated skills section that lists both hard and soft skills relevant to the job. This helps the AI quickly identify your qualifications.

Quantify Achievements:  Whenever possible, use quantifiable metrics to highlight your accomplishments. This can help your achievements stand out and provide tangible evidence of your skills.

Customize for Each Job:  Avoid sending a generic resume for every application. Tailor your resume to match the specific job requirements and highlight the skills and experiences most relevant to that position.

Use Relevant Keywords: Many AI systems scan resumes for specific keywords and phrases that match the job description. Tailor your resume by incorporating relevant keywords found in the job posting but do so naturally and don't over pad.

Use Standard File Formats:  Submit your resume in a common format like PDF to ensure compatibility with different AI systems.

Proofread, Proofread, Proofread

Having a resume that performs well in both human evaluation and digital screening is essential because it maximizes your chances of getting noticed and advancing in the hiring process.

Many companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to screen resumes before they even reach the recruiter. These systems scan resumes for keywords, relevant experience, and qualifications. If your resume isn't optimized for digital screening, it may get overlooked, regardless of your qualifications.

Once your resume passes through the digital screening phase, it needs to resonate with the recruiter who will review it. They look for qualities beyond just keywords, such as communication skills, relevant accomplishments, and cultural fit. A resume that appeals to the recruiter increases the likelihood of being shortlisted for interviews and ultimately landing the job.

By balancing between optimization for digital screening and appealing to recruiters, you ensure that your resume effectively works through both stages of the hiring process, increasing your chances of success.
